Research Interests: Current audio delivery methods lack the ability to convey the spatiality of an environment in its entirety. These systems (5.1, 7.1 etc.) are only able to construct an environment in the horizontal plane. This severely limits the ability of an audience to experience a complete sense of “immersiveness” or envelopment, which is important to being able to perceive the nuances of an environment (with or without accompanying picture).

Amit’s current focus is the evaluation of existing systems (i.e. 5.1, 7.1, 22.2 etc.) and techniques (i.e. Ambisonics, Wave Field Synthesis etc.) for the delivery audio content. The study aims to look at how all these systems and techniques perform for a given set of parameters. The study will also assess current methods of capture and treatment of audio used for the systems listed above.

It is imperative to identify the deficiencies of each system in order to understand the factors which degrade its ability or prevent it from presenting an accurate representation of the captured sound field. It is hoped that results from this study will aid in the design and development of an efficient system(s) that will truly immerse an observer in the rendered environment.
